The cubs gathered for the annual Billy Cart Derby on Sunday. The event is organised by 1st Heathcote Cubs so we are grateful to them for their work getting everything in place for a great day.
Despite the initial rain, the racers were all enthusiastic.
Some took a few moments to show off their racing machines.
The carts are driven by a single rider and powered by a cub pushing. From the start line, the pusher can keep going to the second line.
After that, the rider is on their own for the rest of the trip downhill to the finish line.
The annual event is keenly fought and there is still competition to vie for the honours and to take away a trophy or two. As well as prizes for the races, there are honours for the best decorated cart.
From the heats, 1st Caringbah had an early succss winning several heats and placing well in others to progress to the later stages of the competition.
Of course, no event like this would function properly without a cake stall….
After the heats, the judges spend time carefully reviewing the results to work out the racers for the semi-finals and finals.
In the eight year old races, we had three wins and two second places.
The sucess continued in the nine year olds with a first place …
…. and in the ten year olds.
A photo finish saw us just pipped into 3rd place.
Before another win – in the words of the racer, “The sweet smell of victory”.
Chewie also took the spoils in the leaders’ race.
The overall winners ……
1st Caringbah
Second place went to 1st Oyster Bay
Third Place went to 1st Heathcote
The best decorated Bill Cart award was given to 1st Bangor
Our trophies will be proudly displayed at the cub hall over the coming year.
Congratulations on your win, 1st Caringbah!
